Public Accounts Committee Inquiry on Service Family Accommodation

The Public Accounts Committee holds a session on service family accommodation on Wednesday 8 June 2016.

·          Scope of the inquiry
·          The Public Accounts Committee session will focus on three areas: the state of Service Family Accommodation, the introduction of the new Combined Accommodation Assessment System (CAAS) and the introduction of the Next Generation Estates Contracts (NGEC) and how the Department is managing CarillionAmey's performance against them.

Handhelds at the ready!

CarillionAmey understands that the delays getting faults seen to in a timely manner is one of the biggest issues raised by families. So we’ve rolled out over a thousand handheld devices across the business, each one having been upgraded with new software, that provides the vital data needed to spot your problem and identify the tasks to be done and the specialists needed to resolve it. All in all, the result should be a much smoother experience for families from when they make their initial call into our helpdesk.
Of course no technology is useful if people don’t understand how to use it. So our training teams have delivered an intense training package to operatives (our problem fixers), equipping them with the skills to interpret the data coming from the devices and to make quick, accurate decisions about what action to take. On top of that, we have identified 140 people in the business to act as Super Users, highly trained individuals located in all areas of the business who are able to share their expertise about the technology and deal with issues quickly.

We’re still in the early days and customers will gradually start to see the benefits over the coming weeks and months including reduced waiting times, fewer missed appointments and the right tradesperson sorting out families issues quickly and efficiently.

Armed Forces Covenant Website Launches

The new Armed Forces Covenant website launches today to enable all those who benefit from the Covenant, and those that can support it, to find the information they need in plain English and online.
Serving personnel, service leavers, veterans and their families can access support from the Armed Forces Covenant via the new website. It is a central point of information about the Covenant, and uses real life examples to show what the Covenant does and the practical support available.
It is also much easier for businesses, local authorities and community organisations to find out how, and why, they can sign the Armed Forces Covenant. As signatories, they make a pledge of support that could be providing products and services tailored to service life, to be a Forces-friendly employer of reservists, service leavers and military spouses, or both.

Press Release – Council devotes webpage to armed forces event details

Monmouthshire County Council has established a form on its website to allow the armed forces community to publicise information about its events. The form may be found at: and consists of an interactive calendar and easily accessible fields to place details.

The council signed up to a covenant with serving and former members of the armed forces working and residing in Monmouthshire in October 2012 and since then has worked to develop a bond. A fruitful relationship has developed and both parties have taken a number of mutually-beneficial steps. Among these are the creation of a large body of useful information on the council’s website and steps taken to support Afghan translators who had been employed by the British armed forces.

The county’s communities are also been beneficiaries. One example is Monmouth’s skate park and BMX pumptrack established with the help of a £69,000 Tri-Service Armed Forces Community Covenant Grant scheme.

The council’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor John Prosser said: “I’m sure that this website facility will be very useful for armed forces personnel and their families as well as the community generally. A number of interesting events are planned - including an armed forces stakeholder day in Usk this September - and I hope that our events page will become an indispensable source of information.”

New service for people experiencing domestic abuse

Gloucestershire Domestic Abuse Support Service (GDASS) and Green Square Housing are working together to provide Places of Safety - a service providing temporary short term accommodation for men or women and their families who are living in an abusive household where it would be unsafe for them to stay any longer.
In order to access this service, applicants must engage with a GDASS Support Worker who will be able to help with maximising income through the relevant benefit claims, support with a homelessness application and signpost to any other support services that may be useful. Places of Safety means that the applicant will have somewhere safe and secure of their own to stay while their homelessness application is being decided and will have the support to make plans for their next steps, whether that is resettling somewhere new or returning home. Working with GDASS also gives applicants access to their specialist legal advice, group support and an opportunity to be listened to. For more information, contact GDASS on 01452 726583 or email
